Chapter Five

I woke up to a wonderful smell. I curled up in an unfamiliar bed with sheets that weren't mine, and it took me a few moments to realize the smell came from Derek. I sniffed him just to make sure. He smelled good.

My fingers traced the top lines of scars that ran across his chest. He murmured in his sleep, but didn't join me in this world. I wondered what he dreamed about when he didn't have nightmares. I hoped he had good dreams, of warmth and laughter.

I leaned in and touched my lips to the skin covering his heart. I could hear it beating, slow and steady.

God, but he was beautiful. The scars reminded me of how close I came to missing this, to missing him without even knowing it. He was so fragile, yet strong enough to carry on in ways most people couldn't imagine.

And I love him all the more for it.

* * * * I was sitting and staring out the window when he woke up. I took the liberty of opening the curtains. He stirred and shuffled then pulled himself into a sitting position. I could see him out of the corner of my eye, but didn't turn towards him yet.

"Morning, Hal, what are you…" He jumped up. "Get away from there!" He made it across the room before my laughs stopped him. Now I turned to see him staring, confusion and awe on his face. "Why aren't you…?"

I smiled and my pupils dilated when I looked back into the room. The sun shone bright outside, enough to hurt my eyes, but I still hated to miss the sight. I turned back to the window and placed my fingers on it. "This little pane of glass is protecting me." It was a beautiful day out there and warmth trickled through the window. I basked naked in it.

"How is that possible?"

"I'm not sure." I shrugged.

It had something to do with ultraviolet rays.

Vampires had a high sensitivity to ultraviolet radiation, most likely anything shorter than UVA, according to my casual research. We could obviously deal with the visible light spectrum, and I theorized at least some of the longer UVA waves. Rooms lit by fluorescent bulbs made me twitchy if I was in them too long, but they didn't hurt. "Normal glass filters out almost all of the light that has a shorter wavelength than visible light. So, since there's no ultraviolet radiation getting in here, I'm safe."

He laughed. Actual joy lit his face. "Who the hell found that out?" I just smiled without replying. His laughter sounded great to hear in the morning. Finding out about the sun was a freak accident that resulted from being passiveaggressively suicidal once in my youth. Scientists would probably chomp at the bit to study it if they knew, but I was happy being the only one knowing. Vampires spent their whole lives fearing the sun, staying away from windows during the day just because someone told them to.
